Summer Fruits & Veggies to Support Your Cleanse
Lisa Kilgour, RHNPartager
Summer is such a lovely time to support your body. The longer days, the sunshine, and the natural pull toward lighter, fresher meals, it all works in your favour, especially if you’re doing the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox.
Summer is full of foods that are both satisfying and cleanse-friendly. You don’t have to feel like you're missing out. In fact, many of the fruits and veggies that are in season right now, especially the ones grown here in Canada, can make your cleanse feel a lot more doable (and even enjoyable).
Below is a list of my favourite summer fruits and vegetables to enjoy during your cleanse, along with a few simple ways to prepare them.
Food doesn’t need to be complicated! Look for whole, seasonal food that works with your body, not against it.
Why Eating Seasonal Produce Just Makes Sense (Especially Now)
Our bodies want to eat with the seasons. In summer, that usually means juicy fruits, crunchy veggies, and meals that feel light but satisfying. When we eat what’s growing around us and in its natural season, we often get more nutrients, better flavour, and an easier time digesting (1).
If you’re cleansing, your body is already working hard to release what it doesn’t need. Giving it gentle, nourishing, local foods is one of the kindest things you can do.
Cleanse-Friendly Summer Fruits & Veggies to Enjoy
These fresh fruits and veggies are widely available in the summer months, many grown right here in Canada, and they align beautifully with the Wild Rose food guidelines.
1. Zucchini
Mild, versatile, and so easy to cook. Its high-water content and gentle fibre help keep things moving, which is especially helpful when your body’s clearing things out.
Try it grilled, sautéed, spiralized into zoodles, or even raw in thin ribbons with lemon and olive oil.
2. Cucumbers
Hydrating and cooling, cucumbers are perfect during a cleanse. Add them to salads, infuse them in water, or slice with a little sea salt for a refreshing snack.
3. Bell Peppers
Bright, crunchy, and high in vitamin C. Slice them raw into salads or roast them until soft and sweet. Look for Canadian-grown peppers starting mid-summer.
Try this: Red Pepper Dip
4. Green Beans
A simple, satisfying veggie that’s easy to prepare. Steam, sauté, or enjoy them lightly blanched in a cold salad with herbs and apple cider vinegar.
5. Blueberries
One of the best berries in season in Canada. A small handful can satisfy a sweet craving while still staying within the Wild Rose guidelines (just keep to ½ cup per serving).
Try this: Blueberry and Almond Butter Treat
6. Radishes
These little roots support digestion and add a peppery crunch to any dish. They’re part of the cruciferous veggie family, which means they can help support liver detox pathways (2), a key part of the Wild Rose cleanse. Slice thinly for a refreshing addition to your salads!
7. Raspberries & Strawberries
Naturally lower in sugar than many fruits and packed with antioxidants. Use them to top chia pudding or enjoy on their own with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
8. Asparagus
This spring-to-early-summer veggie is known for supporting kidney function and helping the body gently flush out excess water, a natural companion to any cleanse.
Roast it with olive oil and lemon or chop it into a quick stir-fry. It’s also great chilled in salads or served alongside steamed greens.
9. Leafy Greens
Think lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, anything local and leafy. These are cleansing powerhouses and can be enjoyed raw, steamed, or blended into green smoothies.
Try this: Asian-inspired Green Salad
10. Cabbage
Humble, affordable, and full of fibre. Rich in sulphur compounds and fibre, cabbage helps your liver process toxins more efficiently while also lowering inflammation (3).
Use it raw in slaws, lightly sautéed with garlic, or fermented into a simple sauerkraut (great for digestion!).
Eating Local Summer Produce: A Few Simple Tips
Eating local doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few ways to make seasonal eating feel easier and more intentional:
- Visit a farmers’ market – You’ll find the freshest produce and get to support your local community.
- Buy in season and freeze – Especially berries! Stock up and freeze for later.
- Look for Canadian-grown labels – Even in big grocery stores, many fruits and veggies are sourced locally during summer.
- Keep meals simple – When the ingredients are fresh, you don’t need to do much. A splash of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and some fresh herbs go a long way.
In Conclusion
A cleanse doesn’t require restriction, instead think about adding these delicious fruits and veggies to support your body. And when you choose nourishing, local, summer produce, you’re giving your body exactly what it needs to do what it already knows how to do: restore balance.
Whether you’re deep into your cleanse or just looking to feel lighter and more energized, these seasonal foods are a gentle and delicious place to start.
