Detox Preparation: 10 Tips to Get Started

Terry Willard

Starting the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox can feel like a big shift, especially if the accompanying meal plan is very different from your regular diet. Whether you’re used to cooking at home or rarely step into the kitchen, you might find yourself asking, "How do I prepare for a detox?", "What will I eat?", "I don’t cook!", or even "What if I don’t feel good on the detox?"

To make the most out of your 12-day cleanse and ensure it’s a time of restoration and balance, it helps to plan, get some detox preparation in place and set yourself up for success. Your time on the detox should allow your body to take a break from foods and drinks that may not be doing you any favors, and the benefits can be well worth the effort. Many people report feeling more energized and balanced by the end of the program.

Here are 10 detox preparation tips to help you feel ready and confident as you begin your Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox journey!

1. Plan ahead

Finish eating those things in your fridge that aren’t on the detox meal plan, rather than letting them go to waste. Maybe give them to a friend that is not doing the detox. Pick a day for detox preparation, preferably when you have time to relax, such as on a weekend. If your weekends are very social times, you may wish to start your cleanse on a Monday. That way, you will only have one weekend during the 12 days of the program.

2. Use the meal plan to ease into the detox

Start adhering to the meal plan a few days before taking any herbs in the D-Tox Kit. If this is the first detoxification program you’ve tried, this will make it easier.

3. Plan to eat at home as much as possible

For the 12 days of the detox, plan to cook your meals at home, as many restaurants don’t serve food that is appropriate. If you do eat out, find places that serve healthy food that fits into the meal plan.

4. Prepare on-the-go snacks

Grabbing food on-the-go, such as bagels, muffins and sandwiches, isn’t an option while on detox. Try to always have some food with you, particularly if you lead a busy lifestyle. Don’t let yourself go hungry.

A piece of fruit (one per day from the recommended foods list) or raw veggies are quick snacks to take with you. Almonds are a good choice. You can also prepare extras of any recipe and store them in a container for times when you don’t have time or energy to cook. Thinking ahead is an important key to eating on the D-Tox because it will save you time and potential hassles!

5. Use the recommended foods list to your advantage

Use the Recommended and Acceptable food lists on the meal plan as your shopping list. Pick and choose foods that appeal to you. Don’t deprive yourself.

6. Make detoxing a team effort

The detox is easier and more fun if others are doing it with you. There may be people in your household or friends that would also be interested in cleansing. If they’re not up for the entire program, they may appreciate how much better they feel just following the meal plan for 12 days.

7. Choose seasonal foods

Eat foods that suit the season. If it’s cold and wintry, stick to foods that have been cooked and preferably, heated. Likewise, if it’s a hot season, you may want to eat more cooling and raw foods.

This concept also applies to personal constitutions. If you tend to always be on the cool side (including cold hands and feet), eat foods that warm you up and avoid having a lot of raw salads.

8. Make soups a staple

The use of soups during a cleanse can become central to your diet since they are easy to make. They require little attention once the initial preparation of the vegetables is complete, and they range from light to hearty. The ability to use fresh vegetables all year long, combined with the enormous variety of seasonings permitted on the detox, diet can result in a diverse repertoire of nourishing soups.

9. Spice up your diet

Open up the spice cupboard! Use everything from curry and turmeric to masala and cayenne. You can have salt, pepper, as well as unsweetened rice or almond milk in moderation as well.

10. Swap coffee for healthier alternatives

If you’re a heavy coffee drinker, you may need to reduce your intake during the cleanse – a maximum of two cups is allowed daily, with no sweeteners or milk.

Thankfully, there are several brands of substitutes available in health food stores. Green and herbal teas are also permitted during the detox. They won’t give you the same caffeine ‘kick’ coffee does, but you may find them a good ritualistic substitute when reaching for a hot, steamy cup in the morning. Some people use Yerba Mate, as it has a similar caffeine-like effect, but is more alkaline than coffee.

Prepare for your detox by replacing excessive coffee intake with green or herbal tea

Embarking on the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox can feel like a big change, but with a little detox preparation and planning, you'll be setting yourself up for success. The 12 days are an opportunity to give your body a well-deserved reset, and the benefits are worth it. Stick with the program, trust the process, and enjoy the positive changes that come with it!
